BC Federation of Labour’s Regional Conference

The BC Federation of Labour’s Regional Conference opened with a moving Indigenous welcome from Sylix knowledge-keepers, Wilfred (Grouse) Barnes and Pamela Barnes, of the Westbank First Nation. Their reflections offered a powerful opportunity to consider the true meaning behind land acknowledgments and the deep-rooted histories that shape our connection to the land.

Throughout the conference, participants engaged in dynamic and thought-provoking panel discussions on some of the most pressing issues facing workers in BC today. Topics ranged from the growing impacts of the climate crisis on working people, to the role of the labour movement in shaping progressive legislation like the Anti-Racism Act and the Accessible BC Act. Delegates also reaffirmed our collective responsibility to protect the right to strike and to uphold the sanctity of picket lines.

One standout session was the panel featuring young workers, whose passion and fresh perspectives served as a powerful reminder of the energy and vision that new generations bring to the labour movement. Tracey Phan, a young worker activist stated, “We often hear that young workers are our future, but young workers are here now.” This powerful sentiment serves as a compelling reminder that the voices of young workers are not only vital to shaping the future, but also essential in influencing the present and contributing to the changes we need today.

The conference also explored opportunities for deeper collaboration with grassroots organizations, including the Okanagan Transit AllianceKelowna Pride, and Radical Action with Migrants in Agriculture (RAMA). These partnerships are essential to building a stronger, more inclusive labour movement—one that reflects and uplifts all voices in our communities.

The Kelowna Shop Stewards returned from the conference inspired and energized, carrying with them new ideas, stronger connections, and a renewed commitment to stand in solidarity—for equity, for justice, and for each other.
