A Message From Our President

Reflecting on 2024: A Year of Milestones and Challenges

As 2024 ended, I found myself reflecting on another dynamic and impactful year for the Compensation Employees’ Union (CEU). This past year has been a blend of exciting achievements and significant challenges, all of which have strengthened our resolve to serve and support our members.

Addressing Challenges Together

The most pressing issue we faced last year was WCB’s decision to mandate a return to work, disregarding the terms of the Collective Agreement’s LOU B22-Work From Home language. This has created stress and uncertainty for many of our members. We remain committed to monitoring the situation closely and addressing any developments as we continue to advocate for your rights.

Celebrating Key Achievements

Despite challenges, 2024 was marked by significant milestones and opportunities for growth. Here are some highlights from the year:

· CEU’s 50th Anniversary: We celebrated this momentous occasion by hosting our first-ever Member Education and Engagement Conference. Fifty members were invited to attend, and an anniversary video was produced to commemorate the event. You can view the video on our YouTube channel or from the Video tab on our website. I also sincerely hope you enjoy the 50th Anniversary blanket we were able to gift to each member in celebration of such a substantial milestone.

· Member Engagement Through Virtual Town Halls: Regular virtual sessions covered critical topics such as the Workload Reporting System, Article 51, RTWS Extended Benefits, and the challenges with LOU B22. These town halls were well attended, and we plan to continue them in 2025.

· The CEU Voice Newsletter: Moving to a bi-monthly distribution cycle, our newsletter has brought key issues to member’s attention and linked them to resources on our website. While we opted not to release a December issue due to the return-to-work mandate, we remain committed to delivering timely and quality content.

· Financial Stability: The Treasurer’s Report reflected a healthy financial portfolio, ensuring the union remains strong and prepared for future needs.

· Representation and Education: CEU participated in annual Shop Steward seminars, the CLC Winter School, strategic planning sessions and some major labour conferences and conventions. In Halifax we attended the Canadian Compensation Employees’ Union Conference where we shared and compared Collective Agreement language and experience around common legislation that we face. We also had the opportunity to strategize and learn from each other on common issues like workload, work at home and psychological health. In the fall I was one of several attendees representing the CEU at the 61st Convention of the BC Federation of Labour convention where I was proud to serve as resolution Co-Chair for the week.

· Leadership Transitions:

  • At the Annual General Meeting (AGM), members elected Trish Jardine, Teresa Plesner, and Tyler Casemore to the CEU Balloting Committee.
  • Retiring Directors James Morrison and Adam Andrews were succeeded by Linda LaRose and Ashley Bjurman in virtual elections.
  • Constitutional changes and committee elections were also held, with James Morrison, Roberto Agnello, Dean Lailey, and Jeffrey DeCloedt joining the Negotiation Committee

Looking Ahead to 2025

This new year promises to be just as eventful, with a focus on bargaining for updated Collective Agreement terms that reflect our evolving workplace realities. Member input will be crucial, and we look forward to your participation in the upcoming Bargaining Survey.
